Relation of Virulence of Pneumococcal Strains for Mice to the Quantity of Capsular Polysaccharide Formed in Vitro
نویسندگان
چکیده
The amount of capsular polysaccharide formed in vitro by strains of pneumococcus types II, III, and VII of different virulence for mice has been measured by quantitative precipitin reactions. The quantity produced by strains of high virulence was greater for all three types than that formed by moderately virulent or avirulent strains. It is suggested that an important factor concerned in variations of virulence of pneumococci for mice is the genetic apparatus that controls the amount of SSS synthesized by the cells.

In vitro biofilm formation by Streptococcus pneumoniae as a predictor of post-vaccination emerging serotypes colonizing the human nasopharynx.
The increasing use of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has been accompanied by the rise of non-vaccine serotypes colonizing the human nasopharynx. The vast majority of infections are caused by microorganisms that grow in biofilms. It has recently been shown that the formation of Streptococcus pneumoniae biofilms in vivo and in vitro is hindered by the presence of capsular polysacchar...

Abstract Background and objectives: important virulence factor for many invasive bacterial pathogens of humans. Escherichia coli offer a model system to study the mechanisms by which capsular polysaccharides are synthesized and exported onto the cell surface of bacteria. Biosynthesis of the E consists of the repeat structure -4) GlcA- (1, 4)-GlcNAc- (1-, requires the KfiA,...
متن کاملConstruction of otherwise isogenic serotype 6B, 7F, 14, and 19F capsular variants of Streptococcus pneumoniae strain TIGR4.
The polysaccharide capsule is the primary virulence factor in Streptococcus pneumoniae. There are at least 90 serotypes of S. pneumoniae, identified based on the immunogenicity of different capsular sugars. The aim of this study was to construct pneumococcal strains that are isogenic except for capsular type. Serotype 4 strain TIGR4 was rendered unencapsulated by recombinational replacement of ...
متن کاملIllustration of pneumococcal polysaccharide capsule during adherence and invasion of epithelial cells.
The capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae represents an important virulence factor and protects against phagocytosis. In this study the amount of capsular polysaccharide present on the bacterial surface during the infection process was illustrated by electron microscopic studies. After infection of A549 cells (type II pneumocytes) and HEp-2 epithelial cells a modified fixation met...
متن کاملIdentification of Capsular Serotypes K1 and K2 in Clinical Isolates of Klebsiella Pneumoniae in North of Iran
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most important nosocomial pathogens. Its capsular polysaccharide is considered as the first and most important virulence factor of this bacterium. This study aimed to investigate the presence of capsular serotypes K1 and K2 in K. pneumoniae isolates to examine the virulence ...
